Pee Dee Land Trust :  Director of Education and Outreach

Employer:  Pee Dee Land Trust (PDLT). The mission of Pee Dee Land Trust is to protect, and to promote an appreciation of the natural, agricultural, and historical resources of the Pee Dee Region in South Carolina.  The organization has traditionally used educational activities and voluntary conservation easements as its primary tools to pursue its mission.  The land trust has more than 67 easement projects and has protected over 27,000 acres.  In addition, PDLT owns and manages two properties totaling 267 acres.  

Brief Job Summary:  The Director of Outreach and Education is the primary administrator of PDLT’s Membership, Communications, Education programs, and Fundraisers.  This position reports directly to the Executive Director and works closely with the PDLT Resource Development Committee and Outreach Committee.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate, solicit, and manage retention of PDLT members.
  • Maintain and update PDLT’s member and donor database (Etapestry), managing all related correspondence, and generating member and donor reports.
  • Manage all communications and public relations for PDLT including press releases, media outreach, publications, newsletter, website, social media, and branding and marketing strategy.
  • Plan, secure sponsors for, and execute fundraisers. Current primary fundraisers
           include: Oyster Roast (Winter) and Bountiful Brunch Benefit (Fall).
  • Coordinate with other staff to enact and uphold record keeping policies and procedures that meet Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices
  • Work with staff to assist in the preparation and writing of grants  
  • Manage all educational programming including planning, executing, and reporting on PDLT events (Spring and Fall calendars), tours, and programs for members, major donors, and the general public.   
  • Coordinate landowner gatherings.
  • Represent PDLT as staff liaison with the Outreach Committee of the PDLT Board of Directors.
  • Assist Executive Director, Resource Development Committee and Board by developing and managing major donor and planned giving programs including co-management of endowment campaigns and cultivating major donors and corporate donors.

    This job description does not imply that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. He or she will be expected to perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Time Commitment:  This is a full time (40+ hr/wk) position with some evening and weekend work required, however, approved flex time is available for work outside of the regular 9:00am- 5:00pm, Monday- Friday work week.  

Location:  Pee Dee Region of South Carolina, office currently located in downtown Florence, SC.  Some travel required, mostly within 120 mile-radius.

Job Qualifications

 

Minimally required

Preferred

Education

-          Bachelor’s degree

-          Master’s or other graduate degree in relevant field

Experience

-          3+ years of experience in similar or closely related field such as marketing, communications, event-planning, fundraising

-          Fundraising and event planning for non-profits

-          Public speaking

Knowledge

-          Understand concepts related to non-profit fundraising and event planning

-          Familiarity with member based non-profits

-          Widespread network of individuals and organizations in the Pee Dee

-          Familiarity with the ecology of the Pee Dee Region

-          Familiarity with land conservation concepts

Skills

-          Proficiency in internet research and all standard office productivity software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook/email software)

-          Ability to learn cloud-based member and donor database program and willingness to expand capabilities

-          Proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

-          Excellent written and verbal communication skills

-          Proficiency with Constant Contact

-          Proficiency in writing press releases and media outreach

-          Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud programs (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)

Ability to

-          Relate to and build trust with supporters

-          Concentrate in busy office setting

-          Work alone or as a collaborator as circumstances dictate

-          Present educational material to individuals and in group settings

-          Feel comfortable asking for large donations

Other

-          Must have access to personal vehicle with driver’s license and insurance

 

Working Conditions:  The position includes time spent in an office setting at a computer.  This position may also include light to moderate work in the field during all seasons.  This office is on 2nd floor of a walk-up-only building.

Successful candidates will be required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing / viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading.

Salary/Benefits/work environment:  This is a leanly-staffed, fast-paced office whose staff has enthusiasm for the mission and tasks of the Land Trust. Leadership makes every attempt to give staff the tools needed for excellent results. We are seeking an effective, productive, and enjoyable member of the team.  Salary range $38k-$45k, commensurate with experience.
