YMCA Hartsville
Wednesday, 22 June 2016
Two groups of students from the YMCA-Hartsville visited the preserve on Monday and Wednesday this week. We really enjoyed working with these students because they exuded had a passion for discovering nature and were not against getting their hands dirty when rolling logs! These groups spotted a large number of Southern toads, both newly metamorphosed young toads and very rounded adult toads. One of the highlights of the trip was the inchworm! The students were very excitedly let it inch along their hands and arms. We also found an unusually large red millipede which kept defecating, possibly as a defense mechanism, so we decided to put it back under the log before it got on us.
Thanks parents and guardians for letting us teach your children! We had a wonderful time!
