ACE Basin Adventure

A special thank you to Al Segars, Coordinator for SCDNR’s ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve, for hosting a group of PDLT representatives last week for a fabulous ACE Basin experience!  Al kicked off the morning with a passionate slide presentation about the ACE Basin at the field office (the presentation in itself was worth the drive!), followed by a two and a half hour boat tour of the area.  The weather was perfect and our haul from our cast net drag was plentiful (we threw all the wonderful creatures back after learning all about them).  We stopped for a short walking tour at Bear Island and Donnelley Wildlife Management Areas, where we saw lots of wildlife (birds, rabbits, alligators).

Al Segars is a Hartsville native and is a long time PDLT supporter.  His family donated PDLT’s first easement and he is part owner of Segars Mill Pond, which is now under easement with PDLT as a result of last year’s Black Creek Land Trust consolidation. Throughout the day Al pointed out properties protected by land trust easements and had success stories to go along with most; it was enlightening to learn about the true partnerships between the organizations in that area all working together towards conservation.  It truly was a learning experience for our PDLT leaders and we are happy to bring back new ideas about how we can increase the preservation efforts for our own area.  You will be hearing more about creating our version of the ACE right here in the Pee Dee!

The ACE Basin near Edisto Island is considered one of the nation’s great examples of successful public and private conservation. Over 25 years, more than 217,000 acres have been protected along the ACE Basin, which gets its name from the three main rivers (Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers), including 150 conservation easements (the first was donated by Ted Turner in the 1980’s).  To learn more about the ACE Basin and the plentiful opportunities to experience all of its wonder, visit their website:  http://www.acebasin.net/
