Thank you to those who were able to join us for our first Bird Walk event at the Louise and Woods Dargan Preserve, Saturday, April 11, 2015.  And a special thank you to Travis Knowles for lending us his ears and his expertise.  We hope it will be one of many for years to come. The species list developed from this outing helped us to initiate our ecological inventory of the vegetation and wildlife of the Preserve, with a community-based, Citizen Science approach. While the list was not extensive, it includes the type of species (especially hooded warbler, ovenbird, and summer tanager) that are true indicators of a relatively healthy, mature, intact forest habitat with good structural diversity.  This is the type of habitat that is so vulnerable in many places, and which these birds depend on for their summer breeding season after their long migration north. This is the type of habitat we work to preserve so it is here when they arrive to continue the cycle of life.  It truly is a magical place and we are honored to carry out the wishes of Louise M. Dargan that the land be kept in its natural state and enjoyed just as we did on Saturday.
